Hi Graham GC >BM>There are a few good pollies around, Sam - on both sides - so GC >BM>don't lose hope. Brown in Vic is one. He has done a great job GC >BM>bringing the transport system up to date and has won the support GC >BM>of the unions involved - no mean feat for a Lib! But the full GC >BM>effects won't come through for some years, so he needs to be GC >BM>around to shepherd them along. GC >BM>Button was another good one. He did a great job sorting out our GC >BM>cossetted vehicle industry and our country owes him a big vote of GC >BM>thanks. Plus he is a decent, honourable and self-effacing GC >BM>person. GC >Well Bob its good to see someone have good words to say about polies GC >form either side that try do do the right thing. Too many times we GC >get party politics before whats the right thing for the GC >country/state. The dilemma of democracy is how to resolve the conflicting demands of many groups - all claiming to know what is the right thing for the country. At the moment I think most Western countries are self-indulgently allowing everyone to get his hand in the till - and to expect this as a right. We all seem to want pristine forests, social workers prying in our lounge windows, child support, native rights, teachers who are de facto parents etc etc. The pendulum has swung too far towards expecting governments to mollycoddle everyone. The Scandinavian countries are the extreme cases. There are some signs of change in the US, but they seem to be over- reacting the other way.
