BG> Russell, at 08:53 on Mar 31 1996, you wrote to Bill Grimsley... RB>> Saving a dollar a minute is significant to me. 200 minutes and you have RB>> bought your courier. Even at 50c a minute, it is nothing to sneeze at. BG>> Nice little exercise, but I don't think that Paul makes too many outbound BG>> calls, and certainly very little in the way of STD stuff. Of course, the BG>> same would still apply to his inbound STD and ISD callers. Good point RB>> Some people are Soooo Tight BG> To be perfectly fair to Paul though, $200 IS quite a lot of money when BG> he's not To be perfectly Honest with you AND Paul, Paul is no doubt in a better finacial position that I am. I see that he also dabbles in the stock exchange ( you have to be able to afford this, no matter how "small a dabble" ) and has had the occassional bonus fall on his shoulders. I don't have what he has ...But I've got a Courier and I won't be looking back....Priorities I suppose If he is so careful with investing his money, Why the hell can't he see that a Courier is a BETTER investment than a Yum-Char. Different story if the Yum-Char meets ALL his expectations, but if your expectations are High (as I feel Pauls are) then he must be prepared to PAY. BG> convinced (as I am) that the Courier is a much better modem than the BG> NetComm. I got burnt trying to find the ultimate 14400 when they were on the cutting edge, and swore that I would not get burnt again (in regards to the quality of a product, not the price). I have always believed that you get exactly what you pay for. So in effect, being ripped off, paying the price for a courier is quite OK if it meets ALL of my expectations (and it does) I believe that you still have to take a risk to find that quality. The people that won't take a big enough risk just have to be satisfied with what they end up with. When you brought your V.32 internal sportster over to my place in Oct'94, I was SO pissed off that I had not known you better, or known of the Big buy up that Brenton arranged. (I would have taken 4 at the time) THIS SOLD ME ON USR MODEMS. - No farting around - Reliability - . RB>> Don't even spend money so their users can actually save money BG> If his was a subscription BBS, it would be unforgivable of him to buy a BG> modem But even for a voluntary BBS I would have to have something that came near the best. I don't drink or smoke and I can't chase wild women, so I use the money that I save from that to buy my little luxuries. Paul can have his cigars and wine and netcomm. Oh and the women/wife thing ..well I envy him there. BG> which didn't adequately support the majority of his callers, but whilst BG> it's a BG> voluntary board, and a free dial-up service, he's more than entitled to BG> use BG> whatever modem he likes IMO. If we don't like it, that's our bad luck. Agreed, But Wouldn't he like to KNOW, that he has the best for himself and his users. He will have to take a BIGGER RISK, if he wants satisfaction in life. RB>> Doesn't leave a good taste in a users mouth. BG> Dunno, I'm not at all unhappy with his ultimate choice of modem. After BG> all, I BG> can connect with it at 28800 most times, and that was basically the whole BG> point BG> of his finally upgrading to V.34 anyway, from my POV at least. I can't really understand why I had trouble logging into his netcomm. I dial them most every day, with out the trouble that I had with his, those few times... This EC thing, must have been user error somewhere. BG> Strange as it may seem, I can sort of see his point, even though I BG> disagree BG> with it. I would have preferred that he'd ended up with a Courier, and BG> that's BG> a totally altruistic desire too, as I genuinely believe that the Courier BG> is a BG> much better modem than the M34F, quite aside from its exceptional value BG> as an BG> eminently upgradeable piece of hardware. I still believe that he'd have BG> been BG> happier with the USR in the long term. He really made me so mad, that he could use a Courier and then pass it up for the netcomm. (Money, not being the issue, here) Can't see the grass, for the green. Russell --- Terminate 3.00/Pro* Origin: Electron Migration (3:640/305.55) SEEN-BY: 640/305 450 711/934 @PATH: 640/305 711/934 |
