Roy,
Much of the information I got on equalizing batteries came from Home Power
Magazine. The one article even gave the specific rate of overcharge:
C/5 -> C/10 for 5 hours or so. The 'C' is capacity in amp-hours. My
RV/Trolling batteries that I use on my UPSs are 105 Amp-hours, so I charge
them at 5 amps for 5 or 6 hours once per month. Before charging them, I check
the voltage under load with my battery tester, check the fluid, topping off
with distilled water, and recording the battery tester readings.
The UPSs keep those batteries charged at 13.5 volts, but that's insufficient
to equalize the cells.
The equalization requirement is one reason why most home power folks have a
generator set.
