| subject: | Detect printer in PM app? |
* Peter Fitzsimmons got everyone's attention by mumbling this to Keith Bennett:
KB> How can one detect (within a PM program) whether or
KB> not there is a printer connected and ready? I guess
PF> This is not (supposed to be) any concern of yours; that's the
PF> spoolers job.
PF> Once the print job is in the spooler, there is an API to query what
PF> is going on with it. See the Spl....() functions.
It's possible he wants to write his program in such a way that it'll prevent
users from printing until a printer is available, rather than simply dump
output to the spooler and let the operating system handle problems in its own
inelegant fashion.
PF> If you think you need more direct control of the printer port than the
PF> spooler offers, perhaps you better tell us what you're up to.
I know where you're coming from, but perhaps you could have worded this a
little better. The way this sounds, you're making yourself look like a
member of the Programming Police, out to apprehend criminals who dare to do
things in any manner other than the Standard Way Things Should Be Done. :-)
