subject: &?{at}#$ Dell Power Supplies

Awhile back, we were talking here about some of the Dell power supplies
having proprietary pinouts on the ATX power connector. I finally came
across a listing of the Dell pinouts, and will pass this along for
general information.

This info comes from the 15th edition of Scott Mueller's book -
"Upgrading and Repairing PC's." I copied it down best I could, but
I've been known to make a typo boo-boo and so have Mueller/Que
publishing - - so don't take these as authoritative, but the general
picture of broad deviation from the ATX standard is clear. Mueller
mentions frying components by plugging in the wrong power supply. I
think his case was std PS to Dell system, but looking at what goes where
across the standard pinouts, there are a lot of possibilities for
problems there. Best case, PS would shut down before destroying either
itself or a mainboard. Worst case, PS or mainboard could die by
frying.
Good luck - - - JimH.

Both PS's use a STANDARD ATX 20-Pin POWER CONNECTOR
