Try setting the port speed in Qmodem to 19200.
Turn v42bis off.  &K0 I think. (add it to the init string)
Does this problem occur on different BBS's as well?
If you have call waiting, make sure you put *70,, in front of the
number. This turns off CW for THAT CALL ONLY.
P.S. having other phones connected inside the house has no effect on the
modem connection, that is unless someone picks up the phone and starts
dialing..
