BG> Does your contents insurance policy cover lightning damage? Mine does now,

PE> I don't believe in insurance. I prefer to play
PE> a long-term gamble with the odds in my favour.

BG> Insurance is where they pay you every time your house burns down,

Which isnt exactly something that happens very often, and even if it
did, you can often sue someone else for having caused it in Pauls case.

BG> and you pay them every time it doesn't.

So he is taking little risk not insuring against that.

BG> I used to be uninsured once, until my brother's
BG> best friend's house was destroyed by fire.

Do you avoid driving down to the shops because someone died doing that ?

BG> He was uninsured too, and to fully replace his home cost him
BG> $120k, almost destroying him and his family in the process.

Cant see why it should, anymore than getting the house in the first place did.

BG> Fuck that for a joke, never again.

Its entirely your choice. A surprising number dont insure and
a microscopic number ever have their house burn down. Corse it
might not be a terrific idea if one of the kids is a fire bug |-)

PE> I sent a massive list of bugs to USR technical
PE> support, and not even half-an-answer on one of them.

BG> OK, so USR may not have immediately dropped everything
BG> and addressed your purported problems straight away,

In fact he got the brush off in classic fashion. So did you on the
discrepancy in the AYI11 stats when a USR modem was swapped for a Rockwell.

BG> but the very fact that there have been so many SDLs over the past
BG> 18 months tells me that they are swatting bugs as they find them.

Sure. It would be a lot better tho if they really did for example
get off their arse and have a proper look at say that AYI11 quirk
tho, and atleast tell you what they had observed themselves. Currently
we dont even know if its fixable by USR or its someone elses problem.

USR has FAR too much of a mushroom mentality,
keep everyone in the dark and feed them bullshit.

Not that the others are much better.

BG> It was obvious anyway from the way my new EPROM performed,
BG> that they'd improved certain aspects of the controller code.

It would have been nice to know that they had already noticed a
handshaking problem when the USR was used on an indifferent line and
were trying to fix it tho. That would have avoided massive amounts of
farting around on your part if you were aware it was a known problem.

It just aint good enough in these days of decent communications.
