Last week Judy and I were at WDW. While there, we went one afternoon
to Discovery Island. We talked to a CM on the island, asking about the
rumors concerning the closing. In addition to the rumors, there is
nothing about Discovery Island in the 1997 MKC Guide.
We were told there had been serious thought about closing of DI and using
it for a quarantine station for the Animal Kingdom and then, after AK
opened, closing DI and making it into a honeymoon hotel.
However, it has been decided that DI will remain open, even after AK
does open up. The current manager of DI is taking an interest in improving
the facilities. We noticed now that there is a house the tortises can
go into to keep warm, and and additional snack bar built on the island.
For those not aware, there are three flocks of flamingoes on the island.
The North American/Caribbean flamingoes will remain on the island (with
a small group at Epcot); plans had been to disband that flock. The
South American (Chilean) flamingoes are now in a breeding program; they
will also remain. The African flamingoes will be transferred to AK when
the area for them is ready.
... My hard disk is full! Maybe I'll try this message section thing.
