Then someone told me they bought the company back.

I've got a real old V90 external USR just like yours apparently.

What I do know is www.compusa.com was at one point selling USR branded
internal PCI modems for 8 dollars apiece.

Somehow I doubted they were hardware modems.

Rockwell became  Coextent and I don't know anyone that likes them.
I've two of them 56k here utterly useless as they don't have enough
NVRAM to upgrade to any useful protocol.
Software of course.
