VINTAGE WORLD WAR II BOMBERS TO BE DISPLAYED AT MOFFETT FIELD
Two fully restored World War II vintage bombers, a B-17 Flying
Fortress and a B-24 Liberator, will be on display May 15 to May 19 at
Moffett Field to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the beginning of
World War II. Tours and 30-minute flights aboard the vintage bombers
will be available to the public.
The exhibition is part of the 'Wings of Freedom' tour organized and
sponsored by the non-profit Collings Foundation. Founded in 1979, the
organization presents 'living history' events nationwide to teach
Americans about the legacy of World War II. The vintage bombers will
be on display at Moffett Field, Calif., on Thursday, May 15 from 3:00
p.m. to 6:00 p.m. PDT and May 16 through May 19 from 9:00 a.m. to
6:00 p.m. PDT.
"The 'Wings of Freedom' tour is in honor of the men and women who
fought and died defending the principles of this country," explained
Kory Stendell of the Collings Foundation. "World War II was a
significant period in this country's history and the B-17 Flying
Fortress and the B-24 Liberator both played major roles in winning
the war. Participating in the nationwide 'living history' events
with these historic bombers is an honor."
The foundation requests a donation of $8 for adults and $4 for
children to tour the aircraft. Thirty-minute flights in either
aircraft are available for a tax-deductible donation of $400.
Donations from tours and flights are used to maintain the Collings
Foundation's vintage aircraft. To reserve a flight, call
978/562-9182.
