MD> Can we go back to discussing music yet?
Best idea I've seen in a while. Or we can discuss musicians...
Musician magazine has stated that they didn't name themselves "Music"
because it's easier to write about musicians than it is to write about
music. Almost anything OBJECTIVE you can say about a piece of music
doesn't correspond to what's appealing about it, really. Performance
evaluation has to be more subjective, of course. The intent, reason
for existence, etc. is as important as "technical merit" in music
as much as in painting. Some like Grant Wood, some like Jackson Pollock.
Descriptions of styles inevitably mutate into "Labels", shorthand
descriptions. Disdained by the artists, they DO help Photorealistic
fans avoid Abstract Expressionistic showings. If you don't like
Picasso because he's not "technical" enough, it doesn't make you
smarter than the person who thinks he Rules. Or dumber. Necessarily.
I don't know crap about art, though, so what do I know? I know what
I like and I like what I know....
MD> Do you think King Crimson's
MD> live in Argentina set is worth the money?
I'm saving my money for Live in '69... Wouldn't mind hearing Argentina,
or _Great Deceiver_ for that matter, but at least I have _USA_.
MD> Are you going to go see the
MD> reformed Yes on tour this summer?
I'd rather see the Moody Blues, personally. But then, last fall's Tull/ELP
concert was the first "outdoor" show I ever paid that kind of money to
attend. I enjoyed the show, but...
MD> Do you think the die-hard Gentle
MD> Giant fans will ever tweek that new album out of them as they have so
MD> desparately been trying to on the internet for a couple of years now?
I don't know, man. Be careful what you wish for. From GG's perspective,
how much money could they expect to make from such an endeavor? And why
take on such a hassle for the benefit of a noisy handful of geeks unless
there's some Artistic Need gnawing at somebody's guts? I have 5 or 6
more GG albums than 99.9% of the people in North America, and even I don't
care if they ever put out a new album.
Am I talking about music yet? I got a chance to hear the expanded remastered
_Rainbow Concert_ from Eric Clapton. Better than I expected, and LOTS
better than I feared...
