LR-@> RC> I'm obviously missing something here - I would very much appreciate
-@> RC> those in this conference that listen to railroads to enlighten me
n
-@> RC> terms of what you listen for and what you get out of it.
LR-@>I had to smile here, Roger. I can see where you would indeed get bored.
-@>First and foremost, you have to be a *railfan* as well as a scanner
-@>enthusiast. I listen to 6-7 frequencies for local RRs. Not all the
-@>time, mind you, but whenever nothing much is happening on the
-@>police/rescue channels. I can hear where local commuter trains are
-@>located and where they're headed. Sometimes I will hear a funny story
-@>about someone who was booted off the train. I can hear about delays and
-@>why. I can even hear if there is an accident at a crossing. On rare
-@>occasion an excursion train will come through town on its way to Chicago
-@>and I can monitor its progress down the tracks. I can hear workmen on
-@>the job, too. I guess it's just the day to day workings of the RR that
  -@>gives a railfan a good feeling.
LR-@>I monitor airlines, too. I'm close to O'Hare Int'l airport in Chicago
-@>and can hear the tower to the planes taking off and landing. Most of
-@>that is pretty mundane. I don't spend much time there. Just tune in
-@>once in a while to see if anything is happening. I'd much rather listen
-@>to the trains as the conversations are more diverse and there's a
-@>hometown connection to it. I guess you just have to be a railroad fan
  -@>to enjoy it.
Leah -- thanks for the explination. For those few of you who already
know me, my 'thing' is the federal government. And that can be
extremely mundane as well.
Until one of those damned bombs goes off here in Atlanta and all hell
breaks loose.
I wish they (police or feds) would catch this nut case. He's got a lot
of people a little nurveous down here in what used to be the friendly
south. Guess we're still a slight improvement over Florida (and I'll
catch hell over that statement I bet!)(Smile!)
