FWIW: v.92 is little more than "memory" in the modem that
remembers the speed and connection settings associated with a called
number... when that number is called again, those speed and connection
settings are used to start with... this generally knocks the negotiation
time down to a few seconds... if the stored info doesn't get a good
connect, then a total negotiation phase is initiated and you get the
old-style long squealing sessions...
