Hi yet again... I've been busy with our Winter Carnival Parade... sorry.
Still searching for some text files on that... from AASHTO in the US...
But for now... I did a survey of what words were used commonly and by who
a while back... 93? both here and on the Usenet... rec.bicycles etc...
Can't find that either but from memory and my personal beliefs...
Bike Path (mostly nonexistent): A route separate from any roadway...
for the exclusive use of bicycle traffic...
Bike Path (normal usage): A route separate from any roadway, usually a shared
use facility in a park, that most times allows bicycles to use it...[ I got
not a few notes about signed bikepaths that did not allow bikes..]
Important feature of same is that it is physically separate and away from
roads... typically a super sidewalk.
Bikeway: Similar to Bikepath (ne above) but wider, like a road for bikes.
There are a few of these around.
Bikelane: This is attached to the edge of a road, and is a full traffic lane
and is signed as such... NO PARKING OF MOTOR VEHICLES ALLOWED...
Sometimes people mistake paved shoulders for bikelanes... many
lace
do not allow normal vehicle operation on shoulders pave or
therwise
Bikes follow traffic direction as you would expect... one lane per
side. Cars may merge into BL to turn right, bikes may travel on
left lane to turn left as normal.
[Apparently BC does, and further the shoulder is part of the
legal roadway. I don't like it when there is one paved shoulder
only and local municipalities tell people to ride bi directionally.
Sharing with pedestrians etc...]
Bikeroute: A highway (road) designated as a preferred route for bicycle
traffic. This will be marked/signed and arrowed. [ This will be
selected on utility, traffic, few stops, Traffic lights to cross
major arteries etc... and may include park bike paths or not.
This is the good way I think... lowest cost, highest utility IF you
have to something... allows for a 'virtual' bike lane if one
marks road lane as to indicate bikes allowed. Using Green Bicycle
graphic... painted on road.
Anyway you get the idea of confusion... then you can add the use of path and
trail, singletrack etc. for OFF road cycling and...
Doug
... Share the road with cyclists!!!
