TP>I was reading an airlines mag and it stated that the DC-7 had Turbo
TP>compound engines. Looking at my dictionary, it tells me that it was
TP>a type of turbo charging. Could anyone elaborate a bit more on
TP>this subject? (Ie how was it directed from the exhaust back into the
TP>carb and how many?)
A turbo compound engine uses exhaust gas to drive a PRT (power recovery
turbine). The PRT then drives the main shaft via direct mechanical link.
Notable example. Wright R3350-xx.
A turbo charged engine uses a turbo charger that uses exhaust gas to
drive a compressor. The output of the compressor is used to cram air
into the cylinders. Fuel injection is the norm today, but if a carb is
used the air path would be, carb, compressor, cylinder.
A supercharged engine on the other hand uses main shaft power to drive
the compressor.
Clear the fog away?
Bob.
