It is an outboard (two stroke) laid on it's front (carbs in the bilge, plugs
on top). The outdrive was simply an outboard gearcase attached to a right
angle drive that brought it in the boat. This is the unit that later became
the OMC 'Stringer Mount' Stern drive and is so aptly named because it is only
mounted to the boats stringers, not the transom. This particular engine
wasn't that reliable as an outboard, and putting it face first into bilge
water certainly didn't add to the reliability. Like I said, they had to start
somewhere. :-)
