Dear Dennis:
Actually, I have been to Calgary but only once. I went to Kananaskis
(sp?) Park for the Canadian Boy Scout Jamboree in 1981. We went to
Calgary for the day to see the Stampede. I don't recall the town as being
especially hilly although the mountains just outside the town are pretty
severe.
I think the rule is more universal than just applying to Albertans. I live
in Japan next to a river and the wind pattern most of the time is a
constant west wind. My regular morning ride takes me upriver 10-15 km or
so. In that case, it is uphill *and* into the wind. Of course, the
return leg of ride is downhill with a tailwind so it balances out.
By Albertan standards, the mountains around here qualify as large hills
but they are steep enough for me. There are a few around here that make
me use the bottom gears of my Trek hybrid.
What happens in 2005? I should probably know that, being Canadian (from
Toronto) but I've lived in Japan for the last 8 years and have lost touch
with much of Canadian culture.
Seeya,
Steve
