Mike, have you thought of taking your Newfie to the vet to see
if he has any dental problems? If he is having a dental problem,
it might be painful for him to eat the hard, dry food...
If his mouth is fine and he is just being finicky, then you need to
take a tougher stance with him. Feed him in his crate -- give him
maybe 20-30 minutes to eat. If he doesn't eat, let him out and take
his food away. Try this several times a day. When he gets hungry
enough, he will eat -- and he will also learn that the food will
only be there for so long before he misses out. It isn't cruel to
the dog & it should work -- but it may not work immediately, so be
patient as the days go by. Oh, and during this time, resist the urge
to feed him scraps -- too much could be bad for him. Also, wetting
the kibble is not a good idea -- it deprives the dog of the crunch
which helps to keep the teeth clean and healthy. A little broth,
gravy, or other moisture is fine once in a while, but not on a
regular basis -- the dog needs the crunchiness! This should help
you BOTH out -- and please let us know how things go, OK?
Skritches to your Newfie (what's his name?)!
