I don't know its origin or anything else about it, but many years ago Harry
Belafonte recorded a song about a mine disaster, entitled "Dark as a
Dungeon". I have been looking for the recording for some time and have not
run across it.
An interesting point about the recording involved the fact that every time he
went into the studio to record it, a thunderstorm blew up. Studio time being
expensive, after waiting awhile (unsuccessfully) to blow over, they went
ahead and recorded the song with the storm. It creates an incredibly spooky
background for the piece.
