    Hi Mike,
    The problem is with your Sportster.   You need to tweak your 
init string for better handshaking, perhaps even a ROM update.  I 
ran a USR dual 14.4 for many years in Telemate, without a problem.
    Unfortunately, I used ATZ for my init string and I upgraded to 
a 28.8 last year, so I don't remember the NVRAM settings I used. 
You might want to jump into the USR echo specific help on your 
Sportster.
