Dear Russell, Re your message - =>So, Are you saying that if you import an internal modem =>and customs =>rings you and asks what is in the box so that they can =>decide what =>to charge you, If you say it is an internal card for a =>computer you =>pay 21% sales Tax and they don't count it as a modem (7% =>to 15% of =>sales tax )so they end up with more money than they should =>get but =>you don't get hassled anymore because they did not record =>your =>identifying number Customs do not ring anyone. At the point of entry a Commercial Entry is made (or an Entry for Home ¨Consumption). In this entry the goods have to be clasified. Modems have an ¨identifying classification number. This is entered into the customs ¨computer. What I was stating was that AUSTEL have obtained a list of importers of ¨modems (and it seems components of modems). They are now going around in ¨person (not phoning) and asking if the modems were AUSTEL approved, and if ¨not approved they want to make sure that they are correctly labled. Nothing about sales tax or the other stuff you were talking about. If this is still not clear to you please feel free to call me on (02) ¨667-4554.
