Del,
Balsa USA is probably your best mail order bet. The problem
with mail order wood is being able to get the weight you want. As I'm
sure you know, balsa comes in weight density based on the weight per
cubic foot. It can range from 3 pounds or less to 10 pounds and more.
This density affects the hardness of the wood which in turn helps
determine the areas of a model it might be best used for. I hate
nothing more than to order some sheet wood for a wing, hoping to get
some nice medium balsa only to end up with some real heavy grainy
stuff.
Unfortunatly it costs more up front but, I always go to the
local hobby shop and select all my wood piece by piece. I really think
that in the long run it desn't cost that much more. As a result I get
only the wood I need and I can use the weight of wood I want where I
want. I had a wing kit from a popular manufacturer not long ago. In
it were two sheets of die cut ribs. One sheet was so soft it was
almost unuseable while the other was so hard and heavy it would have
added useless weight to the model. I replace the wood with some from
my own stock and now the model is flying and flies well. 48" wing on a
old OS .20 with four servos, it takes off from the grass with 1 3/4"
wheels. A great little ball park flyer that might have been different
with the heavier wood. Hope this helps.
