DS> Tomorrow I'll have to find a RAR decompression program to handle it.
Funny you should mention that, less than a day after I wrote the
following in the ARGUS echo:
- = * = -
So, a year after the last attempt to run Radius, I decided to give it
another shot. Last attempt ended up in an installation that ran like cold
molasses, with seconds of delay whatever I tried to do. Dunno, to this day,
whatever caused it, and since I'm more than happy with Argus, that I've had
running for several years now, I didn't think more about it.
But, as I said, now was as good a time as ever to retry Radius, so I
started scouting the 'net for the latest version. But already here I ran
into trouble. First it took some time to find the "official"
Radius site. Once there, it turned out that the offered 'rad_beta.rar' was
corrupt and didn't unpack at all. Well, back to the latest
"sharp" version. But that turned out to be exactly the
one-and-a-half year old version I tried the last time. And the three mirror
sites, listed to the left, all turned out to be broken links.
So, I did what Alex told me to do in the first place, I file requested
(magic) RADIUS from 2:461/700. And, sure enough, there I got the latest
EXE-file -- less than 24 hours old in fact. Plus the latest 1.8Mb MAP-file,
that I guess I wasn't supposed to get (right, Alex? :). Unfortunately I
seem to have caught Alex' system on a bad time, because I got a very slow
transfer (slightly more than 2kcps). But at least I was now up and running,
thanks, Alex!
In an attempt to help promote this, IMHO the best piece of software that
happened to fidonet since FrontDoor 15 years ago, I decided to put together
a complete, working package of Radius. With all the subdirectories there,
the latest nodelist and the help files from Argus, both ArgusENG and the
impressive tutorial ArgusTGB, all ready to go in a selfextracting archive.
The INI-file has all the directories set up relative to the main
directory, but if you don't choose D:\RADIUS as the main directory, you
still have to edit *one* line in the INI file. But at least you will have
Radius up and running directly, without having to answer some questions,
that maybe at first you are not sure how to answer.
I hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes here; all I want is help making
Radius easily available to as many people as possible.
The selfextracting archive (2,048kb) can be found at:
http://felten.dyndns.org/rad_zip.exe
And if anyone is interested in the help files (422kb) only:
http://felten.dyndns.org/arg_help.exe
Disclaimer: If you're lucky, you should get 58kcps, if you're not, and
have to share the line with someone else, maybe even my son's KaZaa, you
may get a slower transfer rate. :)
