Marilyn, I don't believe your location will be such a good place foor
growing Asparagus. Aspargus requires a cool growing environment. Your
climate will cause the plants to get leggy and go into the bloom stage
prematurily. Growing Asparagus requires patience and a good humaa rich
soil mixture. Loads of cow manure mixed well into the soil has good
results. Chose a location for the asparagus bed that is FREE of weeds
as it will take several years of growing before you can harvest the
spears. You must keep the weeds out or you will lose site of the
asparagus. If you go to the grociery store and price asparagus spears,
you can understand why it is so expensive. It is one vegatable that
requires a lot of care, and the harvest season is short due to the heat
causing the plants to go into the flower stage. The heats also causes
the lil black bugs to attack the foilage. Spraying sevin to control the
bugs also leaves residue on the spears which in my opinion is not very
tasty. Good luck Marilyn with the Asparagus bed.
