RG>A while back My friends and I were stopped by the police because
RG>we were riding our bikes on the road rather than on the bike lane.
RG>Parts of the bike lane went up and down sidewalks and those next
RG>to the road would gather debris. I'm not sure if
I've heard this is the case in Montreal and in Quebec in general, that
cyclists must use a cycle lane or path if the road has one. Which is why
I have some trepidations riding in a bike in Montreal - the bike lanes
look horrible! At a cycling meeting here in Toronto I met someone who
says she and others used to avoid streets with bike lanes to get around
this - do the police also request cyclists to use alternate routes that
have bike lanes if found cycling on a road without them???
Even in Ontario, where bikes are considered vehicles, we aren't totally
safe - there were moves to ban cyclists from the Niagara Parkway and
force them to use the multi-use path instead.
