Hello Greg -

CA>>>> I have a 233mhz machine that only needs a new fan for
CA>>>> the powersupply (very thin muffin fan not easy to find I

CA>> I have considered doing what you describe but if I could
CA>> locate a thin enough muffin fan the repair would be

GE> How thin is "very thin"? I have a couple of Panaflow
GE> FBA08T12L fans here that I scavenged from two "dumpster" HP
GE> workstations. Very short desktop cases, so the fans slide
GE> into the full-length PS area diagonally. Standard 80mm
GE> outside, only 15mm (19/32") thick.

What you describe sounds about right. I didn't measure the fan
when I had the ps removed. I suspect you mean the fan is
installed horizontally and not vertically? ;-)

The machine is/was new to me and when I saw the nonstandard
sized fan I decided to do as Matt has since suggested and use a
muffin fan I have here with a power cord soldered onto it. I
placed this external fan at the back of the vent for the ps
just to see if this was the _only_ reason the machine was failing
to remain running.

I put my extra fan there and left the machine on for 2 days and
it seemed to be OK once it had a way to cool the ps. It has W2K
installed on it now which is a bit of a 'load' for a 233mhz
machine IMO but while trying to decide what OS to replace it
with I became distracted with other projects and never got back
to it.

Now that I have a KNOPPIX CD I may fire it up again (with the
helper muffin fan of course) and see if KNOPPIX can detect the
onboard video and sound which I seriously doubt. W2K detects
and uses the video and sound as well as the installed winmodem.

I need to watch for sound cards, video cards, and real hardware
modems and keep extras or I'll be stuck with all Windows
machines here like it or not. :-\
