Change line 2871 of gcc.c from
add_prefix (&exec_prefixes, exe, 1, 0, NULL_PTR);
to
add_prefix (&exec_prefixes, exe, 0, 0, NULL_PTR);
and tell me whether this solves your problem and still avoids running
ld.exe from a `wrong' directory (say, ld.exe = list directory).
