There have actually been a few other solid clues that point to Kentucky.

One is where Granpa refuses to recognize Missouri as a state (Kentucky
has a feud with MO regarding the final disposition of the remains
of Daniel Boone).  There is also an episode where someone makes a
reference to going South of the border and Homer says "Tennessee?"

There is a very blatant clue that I cannot remember.

Actually, I read the other day that the show "Father Knows Best" was
set in a "generic" town called Springfield.  I would guess that is probably
the most-likely source of the name of the Simpsons' home town.
