My guess is that you turn your computer on and off every day (unlike
those of us who leave them on continually).  Your problem is common.  If
you must see the init string, I recommend this workaround...
If you're using DOS, hit ALT-O, and go to Modem & Dialling.  Then in
your init string, insert the following *before* your existing init
string:
       AT^M~~~
This will grab the modem's attention, and bring things back to reality
so you can see the string go in, and see the modem's response.
Of course, this may be substituted for any AT command you wish.  ATZ,
AT&F, whatever.  The AT is the important part.  If it doesn't work, try
inserting more tilde's.  (~'s)
