If it's a modern DPMI monitor Windows could probably detect it on reboot. I know the M$ W98 defaults for my test bench's IBM 8513 won't work at anything but 16/256 colors, and 256 only after I diddled the .INF file to set the right default refresh rate. So the default detection might or might not work. ...
