BL> It's obvious that we keep getting up the FIDO-drongos noses,
BL> and it is not going to get any better. IMO, it would be better
BL> to cut our losses and go private now, before a poofter or
BL> politically correct cunt turns nasty and tries to do us harm.

RS> Soorree, thats just letting fido wankers force us to comply with their
RS> brainless desires. No thanks, they can go and fuck themselves instead.

BL> I don't see any value in a "nya, nya, nya... you can't make us,"
BL> argument with Fido.

And I cant see the value in allowing one or two FidoWankers to throw
their weight around, proclaiming on what we must do in AVT to comply
with their wishes. There is also the question of how much its just a
try on, attempting to big note themselves, which wont actually result
in any action at all if we dont choose to change anything we do in there.

It aint nothing new, even with the major mail movers. Sydney for
a long time had TWO cliches of major mail movers with mindless
politics and backbiting going on between them. QLD STILL has a
quite separate system on quite a bit of the important traffic
with Alwyn. Its just the usual mindless petty backbiting thats
endemic in almost any hobby group, petty jealousys and backstabbing.

I have always said that I think it does make considerable sense to not
dump huge UUCODES in there, because that may well be something that
causes some of the mail movers, particularly those who pay for volume,
to choose not to cart that around at their expense. Particularly when
we can all FREQ and its trivial to add FREQ capability even if you cant.

The primary advantage of AVT still moving around the bulk of Aust
is that we do get some new blood on occasion. And there is no reason
at all why we cant choose to do some of the mail moving ourselves if a
particular mail mover no longer wants to move AVT. It normally wouldnt
even cost a local call charge if done properly.

BL> We've been private once already, and all that
BL> happened was that a LOC net established itself.

Yes, but you also have to wonder what the point of making AVT just another
of those too. We already have the convenience of the best of both.

BL> I'd rather get out ahead of the rush.

I dont believe there is any rush, the most that may be necessary is
to move AVT ourselves were a particular mail mover chooses not to.

BL> And they can do us harm.

RS> Pigs arse they can. They can indeed choose to move AVT thru the main
RS> mail hubs or not, and we can choose to make our own arrangements
RS> if they do. Which we have already done with LOC* anyway.

BL> That's not the harm I was talking about.

They CANT do us any harm on AVT. We can do what we like.

BL> My point is that I can't see how Fido is any advantage to AVT.

Clearly it is on the new blood. And the other question is whats the
advantage of making it into another LOC* when we have that already.

BL> The only newbies we get come through personal contacts,

Nope. And you have no idea how may lurkers there are either.

BL> so what is Fido doing for us?

We do get the occasional example of new blood.

BL> The ones who collect AVT expecting a
BL> discussion of AVTEK modems soon leave,

Yes, but thats just as true of any echo which has a
less that completely unambiguous name. Its no big deal.

BL> and the rest of us are perfectly capable of
BL> setting up our own private points-only net.

Sure, but we ALREADY have one of those.
