Let it sit for an hour at high cpu usage and see if it returns to normal
again after that. I've seen two things cause this, one is virus looking for
email addresses, the other is DOS attack. If it returns to normal do a

netstat -an

and see if there are a lot of connections, if so then it's email virus.
