WAYNE CHIRNSIDE wrote in a message to CHARLES ANGELICH: WC> Saved a detailed web page on the use of Tar and Gzip. ect. I did a bunch of looking at tar, a while back. I'd installed a tape drive, and wanted to play with it a bit. I did get it working, but after managing to tar a few files on to the tape I stopped bothering with it, and eventually disconnected and removed it... In my researches, I found that there was a _lot_ more about tar in the info pages than there was in the man page. Don't like info, don't like the user interface, but there it was. About the only use I ever heard of that made some sense was for a linux system that handled a lot of dos and win files, to check _those_. A little strange to operate, but *very* powerful stuff there. I can refer you to some online articles if you want. WC> Verizon used to allow one to stay online for extended periods but WC> now seems to log you off at 5 hours tops even with activity :-( WC> Time to change providers, it's my 150 Hrs/Mo and I should be WC> allowed to chose how I use them! That's one of the reasons I changed. Absolutely no mention was made of this when I signed up, and then they acknowledged it, and still didn't have any mention of it on their web page until I bugged them about it. My irritation stemmed from the fact that there were occasional large downloads that I might want to do that wouldn't be possible with this setup. If the site in question didn't allow me to resume where I'd left off, I was screwed. Not to mention the lousy connect rates... I was emailing with my brother on this subject and gave him the local access number for my new outfit where he lives, and he had the same experience, going from not ever connecting any higher than 33.6 to 49-something on the first shot. He said something about giving them a chance to fix it, but they're not gonna fix it... Screw 'em. WC> You know that's one of many things I'll have to look into. WC> No bother now the man pages and HOW_TO's are on the local WC> drive :-) CA> Linux only installs manpages for installed binaries (each archive CA> of a binary includes it's own manpages). If the binary is not CA> installed you will not find it's manpages either. Unless you have a setup like mine... :-) WC> I think Knoppix installed *EVERYTHING* here. Hey I've not even WC> 1/10th explored all the GUI apps on KDE let alone the command line. When you do get around to the command-line stuff, mc is your friend. :-) WC> Right now I'm up to my eyeballs in stuff to do, I know the feeling! WC> If she crashes and burns no big deal as Knoppix is a snap to WC> install! Yeah, that lasts until you have a certain amount of time invested in making it work the way you want to, configuring stuff, etc. CA> I _think_ the general consensus has been to use 'dd' for creating CA> image files for backup purposes from a Linux install? WC> I'll do a man dd and check that out :-) It's a handy utility, I used it to wipe the boot sector on that XP box that's been a pain in the butt for me lately, stuck tomsrtbt in there and after logging in typed "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1". If it hadn't been so late and me so tired I would've left off that last bit and wiped the whole drive, it'd have been easier in the long run. CA> Hard drive speed (or lack of) is the weak link in the 'chain' CA> for many systems. WC> Know it. February brings a 80 Gig drive and Siig Ultra 133 I/O WC> controller card. You have a vendor picked out for that drive yet? I'm still looking. WC> For March I may change ISP's to 1/2 price local outfit or go DSL WC> where I'm at not sure which yet. CA> If you're considering going DSL then there is no need for the 56k CA> modem. Any decent modem is OK as a 'backup' for emergency use once CA> you have DSL. WC> Five year warrantee on the hardware external I've in mind and the WC> cost for the local ISP is only 9.95 unlimited dialup. Just make sure that when they say "unlimited" they really mean it! WC> BTW the dialer in Knoppix connects and negotiates way faster than WC> Windows' dialer. Big surprise, eh? :-) CA> The Winamp lookalike included with KNOPPIX seems quite good here CA> for most music files. XMMS? It seems to work well for me, too. ---* Origin: TANSTAAFL BBS 717-838-8539 (1:270/615) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 270/615 150/220 379/1 396/45 106/2000 633/267 |
