Actually, he might be grieving for the lab.
Do you have any other dogs?
Maybe he needs a new 4 footed friend?
I know that when one of my pups pass away, the others have exhibited symptoms 
of grief for a period of time.
But the interaction between them eventually brought them back to normal.
