The FRS was taken from the General Mobile Radio Service. It consists of the
GMRS "interstitial" frequencies (never have quite figured out where they
found that word) and the frequencies exactly .600 mhz above them. They pretty
much just robbed us GMRS holders of the privacy we had on these frequencies.
I dont think that the FRS is allowed as much power though. The range they
advertise is a bit optimistic though. Ive done a good bit of experimenting on
the adjacent Amateur radio freq's and range can be a real problem at 400+
mhz; particularly at the low power a (an) unregulated ht will have. On the
flip side...the signal quality is usually wonderful. The prices I have seen
so far have been totally out to lunch! They want more for those things than
my 2 meter/440 ham rig. They're nuts!
