I need to obtain a large hard drive and I need to obtain a 56K modem. February it looks like now. CA> I actually forgot the other computer was available. Does your brother have a wideband connection? CA> Anyhow ... now to get acquainted with KNOPPIX. :-) Well you were right about the 2 Gig's of files. The HTML with this info comes up as a local file in Konqueror when you boot to Knoppix. I've got a bootable diskette now too, in German but boot: knoppix home=/dev/hda2 still works to restore my saved settings in the applications I've setup. I really should have used FIPS if only to make a copy of the MBR. Will fdisk /MBR work on a Win 98 system and if so will sys.com from a recovery disk restore a bootable Win 98 partition? I've got a real mess of scrambled partitions in there just now and need to fix it. I can try fdisk d and fdisk n to try to make a bit larger partition to take it all. Hit the wall yesterday on space using the save configuration and checking off applications as well from out of "configure" in the little bar across the bottom of the screen's penguin ICON. I like the defualt setup where you use the shell icon to enter the command line as user and use the penguin icon to enter as root user. Three Gig's seems the right size for all the near 9,000 applications and utilities plus a Gig breathing space. I especially like the fact Mozilla's Firebird browser is on there and it's the same release I downloaded for Windows!!! 2 Gig's is a LOT of space but it still doesn't act like bloatware :-) The only hardware Knoppix does not setup is the the software modem, sees it but no driver found, and the sound card which is part of that same modem card. Fortunately I've a Turtle Beach Sound card here I can swap out when I get a real external 56K modem both Windows and Linux can share. I just love the Knoppix CD you sent along, in fact along with the hardware J.H. sent allowing me to use it this CD is likely the best gift anyone has ever given me :-) --- Platinum Xpress/Win/WINServer v3.0pr5* Origin: FONiX Info Systems * Berkshire UK * www.fonix.org (2:252/171) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 252/171 140/1 106/2000 633/267 |
