Some printers aren't inside what they look like outside. For instance, 
the HP inkjet 1600 - 2000 - 2200 are inkjet printers all right, but they 
do work with _laserjet_ drivers (laserjet.exe)!
Guess it must be about the same phenomena with the Canon thingies.
