       In the northern caves  You should have seen a image of Sephiroth 
heading out to a door.  Follow him.  After a while, you should be at the map 
screen.  Look for a village.  In the back there's a guy walking around. 
press SELECT to see where you can go.  Go to the closest exit (upper most 
right).  The guy will warn you, ignore it.  The rest I'll leave up to you.
