BG> where you can set the DIPs to &C0 and &D0, which BG> overrides an accidental AT&F1 which would set these BG> to &C1 and &D2, and render the modem useless? RS> Fraid not. Try explaining how you can use all those modems RS> which have no DIP switches on Macs and Amigas. Supra even have RS> specific Mac packs, which are just a cable and Mac software. BG> The bottom line is that you don't have to use them if you don't want to. RS> Yes, and they are always a potential problem for some stupid fiddling. RB> Even so called experts can get cought out with switches True, its not hard to do when tearing around without the docs too. Or say need a replacement in a hurry when one dies and cant put your hand on the docs etc. RB> I just had a computer here that I sold new to a pommie RB> electrician 8 months ago, who fried the said computer by RB> moving the voltage selector on the power supply to 115 volt. Yeah, thats a classic example where a power supply that can auto operate over 80-280VAC without any switching has some real advantages. Corse, in that case its got some economic problems with going that route too. RB> He said he wants it fixed for free under waranty and so I told RB> him that waranty wont fix problems caused by stupidity or user RB> error, and to contact his household insurance company and try to RB> get a fusion claim (fat chance, Ive seen their applications before) Dunno. One of the places here which is the best source for stuff like a pump for the air cooler just offers you the paperwork to claim as a matter of course, some must be paying out on that stuff. RB> He then proceeded to tell me that he is an electrician and RB> his daughter is studying to be a doctor (first yr) and they RB> would not be as stupid as to flick a switch. ( a man must RB> have come in throught the window at night and done it) Yeah, its amazing what some people will try on. They dont appear to be able to grasp how certain you are that its a lie. Bit like little kids who claim they havent got a clue how something got broken when there is no other possibility than the culprit himself. RB> I saw the evidence with my own eyes. Voltage selector RB> switch was on 115volt when I first saw the machine. He's obviously one of the thicker ones around |-) @EOT: ---* Origin: afswlw rjfilepwq (3:711/934.2) SEEN-BY: 711/934 @PATH: 711/934 |
