It's 27 Sep 97 02:12:00,
We'll return to Jim Trulock and All's
discussion of Possible Network
JT> use the Internet utilities on Computer 1 to reach the internet.
JT> Arranged something like this ...
JT> Computer 2 ---LAN Cable--->Computer 1---Com3--->BBS line
JT> |
JT> |
JT> ---------Com2-->Internet line
JT> The LAN Cable would be anything from a Parallel Port cable to a
JT> full-blown ethernet card/cable. Also, Com2 would be non-dedicated on
JT> the Internet.
JT> Both computers would run OS/2 Warp 3.0 Connect. Computer 1 has both
JT> TCP/IP and IBMPEER, but Computer 2 only has IBMPEER.
JT> Is it then possible for Computer 2 to connect to Computer 1 (via the
JT> LAN), start a PPP session on Com2, and then view web pages using Web
JT> Explorer on Computer 2?
You need to add 2 things: Firstly, install TCP/IP on the second PC.
You need this to access the Internet at all. Secondly, unless you have
a range of reserved IP addresses, you'll need to install InJoy (and
register it) on the machine that dials the Internet, to allow the second
PC to access the Net, by means of a technique known as IP masquerading.
Once all this is done, you should have no problems.
JT> My reasoning for this setup ... Computer 1 is my computer, with my
JT> BBS, my Internet "toys", and where I work. Computer 2 is mom's
JT> computer. She doesn't want to have a "direct" connection to the
JT> Internet, but likes to "play" occasionally.
JT> Also, is it possible to boot IBMPEER without the LOGIN screen coming
JT> up? Just curious, in case of power failures. I wouldn't require a
JT> separate login for each member of the family, as on my machine
JT> (Computer 1), I would only share those dirves/directories that I
JT> choose to share.
I believe this is possible with a NET LOGON command in the startup
sequence somewhere.
... What can you do at 3 AM? Psssttt - got a modem??
