And so it came to pass, on 09-06-96 10:59,
that Steve Holmes spake unto Matt Ion:
SH> Thanks for the info on Speech recognition, especially the info of
SH> the Merlin OS. My interest is mainly as a teacher who runs a
SH> network of IBMs. I'm interesting if there's some way of getting a
SH> whole class full of users to work with such programs, and not have
SH> to spend $700 per user.
The current $700 package does include the custom sound hardware that that
version of VTD requires... Merlin's VTD will work with any sound card that's
supported by the OS (which includes almost all SB-compatibles).
SH> I got a copy of the VoiceType Dictation CD from IBM, but what I
SH> probably need is some utility whereby I can write my own programs
SH> and incorporate speech detection capabilities in it.
Take a look at Merlin when it comes out (public beta should be available
sometime this month). It will include VoiceType as an integrated part of the
OS, which makes it relatively easy for a developer to integrate its
capabilities into applications (BTW, it the Voice Navigation will work with
ANY apps, and when using an app that's not VTD-enabled, it will place the
dictation into the system clipboard, which allows you to easily paste it into
any application.
I don't have any of the details on it, but the VTD API should be readily
accessible to anyone with a supported development package, as well as being
accessible through the built-in REXX interpreter.
