GS>play ground and I still her a few seeds with her pelets. Can you suggest
GS>a few brands that I can try. We take Bird Talk Magizne and there are more
GS>than a few brands advtised in that Magizine.
My birds prefer Hagen Tropican, Pretty Bird, Kaytee Exact, and
Lafeber's, in that order. Some are brightly colored, others are tan or
other natural shades. Some folks don't like serving the colored pellets
because of the artificial coloring in them, other folks think the bright
colors attract the birds to the pellets.
Whatever you try, it may be a while before the bird eats any. In 1987, I
had to convert a malnourished conure to pellets in order to literally
save her life--the rotten diet she'd been on for many years had left her
very sick. I couldn't get her to eat the pellets, but I COULD get her to
drink apple juice. So I began floating a few pellets in her juice dish,
and gradually added more and more every morning (changing the juice
several times daily, of course, to prevent bacteria buildup).
Finally, she ended up with a layer of pellets, with a very thin puddle
of juice on top. She'd drink the puddle, then lick the pellets to get
more juice. One day she finally ATE a pellet (actually just sucked the
apple juice out of it, but she did swallow some). From there, she began
to actually ingest the pellets. I gradually reduced the amount of juice
daily, until her pellets were finally served dry, with a separate dish
of juice next to them. She would dip the pellets in the juice, but at
least she ate them. She's still alive today, doing fine, and reproducing
every summer, thanks almost entirely to those pellets. Using the apple
juice was a lucky trick, but it worked.
