I'd like to thank Pete, though, for making me revist this bit of
knowledge and investigate it afresh to see whether there might be
another avenue of verification. He's absolutely right to insist on
acceptable evidence.

Turns out there *is* something.

One of the questions Pete asked me via email was what Ed and Mrs. Ed
would have been doing returning from England on Thursday 31 October
1963---just in time to see the uproar surrounding the Beatles---when (a)
Ed had a show the previous Sunday and (b) Ed had a show the following
Sunday. Assuming both the Oct 27 and Nov 3 shows were live (and at the
start of the broadcast season that a reasonable assumption), why would
he go to London or elsewhere for such a short vacation?

Turns out it was a working vacation. Ed's show on Sunday Oct 27 was
taped at Wembley Stadium in England for broadcast that night on CBS.

So Ed was indeed in England at the time. Here's the Oakland Tribune
preview of the show, published on 13 Oct 1963:

http://www.physics.ucla.edu/hep/fab/oakltrib13oct1963.jpg

And here's the TV listing on Sunday 27 Oct 1963 from the High Point
Enterprise newspaper, High Point NC:

http://www.physics.ucla.edu/hep/fab/edshow27oct1963.jpg

So Ed was in a position to have coincidentally been passing through
London Airport at the same time the Beatles returned on a flight from
Sweden, greeted by mobs of fans. And that seems to have made a
verifiable impression on him.
