I've never setup a 'user CA> account' for myself and have always been 'root' on all of my CA> machines since I am the only 'user'. :-) CA> I was referring to the necessity to un-mount devices etc. CA> rather than the automated way that Windows (and other OS) do it. I have to alter two files to mount hda1 on boot but have no plans to do so. As need arises I'll mount them from root and umount once I'm done moving files. WC> Well the CD you sent is safely tucked away and Knoppix WC> installed flawlessly onto my hard drive dual boot. About WC> the same installation time as for Win 98!!! Got it dual WC> booting as well :-) CA> Very good. This should make for a considerable speed difference CA> now that it is installed on the hard drive. Especially when I slap an Ultra 133 I/O card and drive in there :-) Much happier with Knoppix on the hard drive. Found Dillo browser is already included as is AbiWord word processor. Still prefer Firebird browser though which is included and the same release I've got in 98 :-) WC>>> There's a Linux InfoZip? I use Pkzip 2.50 in DOS here. CA>>> Yes, you use pkzip in DOS but you won't have access to CA>>> that when using KNOPPIX. ;-) WC>> That much I knew, GZIP CA> Nope. Neither GZIP nor BZIP are compatible with Pkzip, Infozip CA> _is_ compatible with Pkzip though it is not a replacement for CA> GZIP or BZIP or BZIP2. You need all of them. Yeah kinda figured that out afer I hit a Infozip web site where it's available, and bookmarked. CA> Most FIDO BBS will CA> be sending you Pkzip'd archives not GZIP'd nor BZIP'd archives. CA> :-) Wonder if Ross Cassell's Linux based BBS offer a Linux native decompression - compression option, I'll check next time I'm there. Saved a detailed web page on the use of Tar and Gzip. ect. Need to snag MultiMail for Linux as well as the home user Linux version of F-prot. The syntax for telnet transfers is going to take some research on my part. I've seen references to a BSD - Linux hack of ztelnet but as yet no download link. SCP stands for Secure Copy and is another possibility I need examine to see if it's suitable to this use. CA> --8<--cut WC> MultiMail binaries are available from William McBrine/s web CA> Yes, you need all of the versions of 'zip' in order to CA> uncompress various Linux archives but for FIDO only InfoZip CA> will generally be of use for compressing/uncompressing echomail CA> packets (QWK etc.). Got it. Bookmarked a web site it's available at in Linux Firebird. CA>> If you intend to _create_ files you will need Windows for CA>> the foreseeable future. WC> I'll pickup Abiword as word proccessor so I can have MSWord WC> compatibility and WP can convert. CA> Word processing is only one way to create files. I was thinking CA> of graphics file manipulation/creation, sound/music file CA> manipulation/creation, and others. :-) There's a pretty impressive assortment of multimedia, sound, video and munipulation apps native to Knoppix. I need to lose the Rockwell sound card - modem combo and slap the Turtle beach sound card in there before I try the Audacity MP3, WAV, ect application. Native T.V. video card app. in there too. Two of my favorite old arcade video games are there as well, Galaga and Asteroids. WC> The Peanut Linux abbreviated Partition Magic made setting WC> this up after scandisk and defrag a breeze but I fdisk'ed WC> the drive with ramdrive Basic Linux 1.8. CA> Steven did a good job on that mini-install. :-) Not having wideband I never could snag the image file :-( But the hacked down PM resizer did the job for me and that's in the zip package :-) Verizon used to allow one to stay online for extended periods but now seems to log you off at 5 hours tops even with activity :-( Time to change providers, it's my 150 Hrs/Mo and I should be allowed to chose how I use them! WC> Gave the command to launch the interactive GUI script from WC> root and off she went like a charm :-) hda1 - Win 98, hda2 WC> experimental Linux native, hda3 256 Meg swap and hda4 3 Gig WC> Linux native for Knoppix. WC> So smimplee a cihld kood due it ;-) CA> Not quite that simple. You've had time to acclimate yourself to CA> the 'hda' and other Linux terminology while using the other CA> mini-installs. From ground zero the terminology would be a bit CA> of a stumbling block I suspect. Intimidation-wise for sure for most but I like puzzles and obscure syntax like this... well much of the time until it takes me too long to work around a snag. I've still some things to learn from those mini-intalls and thats why I've got the spare Linux native partition, later I may tack it on in Knoppix on boot. CA>> If you only intend to use other peoples files then you can CA>> drop Windows. CA>>> Image copies of the partitions would be safer but, yes, CA>>> I've done that here for my multiboot to DOS and W2K. WC>> I've used xcopy32 with appropriate switches as well. CA>> That might work for FAT partitions but won't do much good CA>> for the Linux partitions. :-) WC> You know that's one of many things I'll have to look into. WC> No bother now the man pages and HOW_TO's are on the local WC> drive :-) CA> Linux only installs manpages for installed binaries (each CA> archive of a binary includes it's own manpages). If the binary CA> is not installed you will not find it's manpages either. I think Knoppix installed *EVERYTHING* here. Hey I've not even 1/10th explored all the GUI apps on KDE let alone the command line. So far all the man pages I've invoked have shown up. WC> I may yet delve into that imaging software you mentioned WC> I've on the FAT 32 partition when I obtain a second drive. CA> Before you can create image copies of your partitions you will CA> need another empty drive to write them to. :-) Right now I'm up to my eyeballs in stuff to do, I think I'll trust the 6.4 Gig Quantum drive to last two months before I occupy the spare drive bay with a large drive. If she crashes and burns no big deal as Knoppix is a snap to install! Likely will just do a clean install from the CD anyway, too easy :-) CA> BooitNG compresses the image files but I would think that Linux CA> can also compress the image on-the-fly as it is being created. CA> I _think_ the general consensus has been to use 'dd' for CA> creating image files for backup purposes from a Linux install? I'll do a man dd and check that out :-) WC> Next month it's a 56K hardware modem, following month hard WC> drive and Ultra 133 drive controller card. CA> Hard drive speed (or lack of) is the weak link in the 'chain' CA> for many systems. Know it. February brings a 80 Gig drive and Siig Ultra 133 I/O controller card. WC> For March I may change ISP's to 1/2 price local outfit or WC> go DSL where I'm at not sure which yet. CA> If you're considering going DSL then there is no need for the CA> 56k modem. Any decent modem is OK as a 'backup' for emergency CA> use once you have DSL. Five year warrantee on the hardware external I've in mind and the cost for the local ISP is only 9.95 unlimited dialup. BTW the dialer in Knoppix connects and negotiates way faster than Windows' dialer. The big attraction to DSL is all the Linux freeware out there and streaming multimedia. Just briefly looked but it seems Knoppix may also have an auto-update feature but that'll wait for a larger partition. WC>> SMTP, POP3, Newsgroups and all that's left is telnet and WC>> some multimedia apps. CA> The Winamp lookalike included with KNOPPIX seems quite good CA> here for most music files. I would recommend either CuBase or CA> Timidity (I prefer Timidity myself) for MIDI music files (there CA> are links to Timidity at my website MIDI page). There are 5 meg CA> and 8 meg GUS patch files available for CuBase and Timidity, CA> you don't _have_ to use the 30 meg EAW GUS patch files. I vaguely CA> remember some talk of a RealAudio Linux app but no name comes CA> to mind for that one. Audacity? CA> I'm still wondering about graphics. I have GIMP from GNU/Win CA> here and it's not an easy program to use IMO. I'm looking for CA> another user interface that is more familiar (to me). Got GIMP, haven't used it yet. WC>>> Another favorite is "Catch 22", the book not the movie. CA> Jon Voight's character Milo Minderbinder IIRC. CA> stealing from the military and trying to CA> blackmarket as much as possible is something Putin recently CA> mentioned as one of our 'mistakes' in Iraq. Putin said the CA> smaller countries contributing military to Iraq were mainly CA> such characters who were more interested in stealing artifacts CA> and smuggling than in peace keeping. I believe him. Same here. --- MultiMail/MS-DOS v0.45* Origin: BBS Networks {at} www.bbsnets.com 808-839-6036 (1:10/345) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 10/345 106/1 2000 633/267 |
