subject: fstream identifying mode

I've scanned the help, headers, books, everything I could find, and can't
find
the answer to the following:
Is there a way to identify the mode that an fstream was opened in?
(binary vs. text -- borland 4.5)
If so, HOW?
I've looked at the various iofstreams, iostreams, ios, streambuf, etc...
class definitions, but nothing pops out screaming *IT'S ME* :(
