You're quite correct. I've been a printer for over 20 years and have used
some pretty drastic materials. To me, toxicity is a realative thing. One
other thing that you and others might like to take note of is that all
solvents can be absorbed through the skin.
A 50/50 mix of solvent (varsol or kerosene) and 10W motor oil makes about
the best (and most economical) chain cleaner/lube going. After cleaning a
chain, the dirt will settle out and you can pour off and reuse the cleaner
several times.
