subject: DosRead blocking

-=> Quoting James R. Cook to Phil Crown <=-

JRC> Isn't DosRead supposed to block if no bytes are available to be read?

JRC> I'm playing with serial I/O threads and if DosRead doesn't ever block

JRC> on a read from the comm port, there's no reason for the overhead of a

JRC> thread, mutex semaphore and all that other garbage. Thanks!

PC> Yes, DosRead will block, but you have to tell the com port which mode

 PC> to use.

 JRC>

JRC> Ach. You can do that on ports that are already open? i.e. a little

JRC> shim that sits between a BBS and it's mailer?

Yes, it could be a shim, or a layer between the calling app and the

called app, but it could also be built-in to the program.

I know P.EXE (the freeware Zmodem package) makes changes (to the

read/write timeout, at least) when it is passed a com port handle.
