First HD I ever bought was Seagate. Warranty - 12 months. Failure date -
about 55 weeks. Took over 10 years for me to buy another.

WD - winmodem of hard drives, and dismal reliability to boot. I don't
think I know anyone locally who hasn't had at least one WD fail within a
few months of warranty expiration, if not long before.

I've used various benchmarking utilities over the years, including
Sysbench under OS/2. Maxtor is the only one to outright fail in
benchmark tests, and nearly every one not directly descended from
Quantum seems to find a way to do so.

I liked and had good luck with Quantum, but after is absorption into
Maxtor, I had to look elsewhere for ATA, which led me to IBM. Maxtor
wasn't making SCSI for a long time before it disappeared into Maxtor.
Quantum's SCSI technology survived the absorption, so "Maxtor" seems to
be OK for SCSI.

Having no experience with recend Seagate SCSI, I can't really comment.
Won't buy one as long as IBM/Hitachi seems OK.

Having no faith in anything made by Samsung, that really only leaves
Hitachi and Seagate to choose from in ATA.

The recent Seagate ATA drives are too quiet. I can't tell they're
running without a stethoscope. That's OK for installation in other
boxes, but not my own.

For my own boxes, that leaves only Hitachi as an across the board choice
(both bus types).
