BG> I see your point, but not all high-end modems like USRs are used on
BG> PCs or BBSs, and DIP switches can be useful in those circumstances.

RS> Nope. By definition you must still be able to communicate with
RS> the modem over the comms port to do any configing you want to do.

RB> I thought that this was one of the reason that these used Dip

RB> my courier from your place and reconfigure the whole modem remotely.

The trouble is tho that that doesnt hang together logically. It
doesnt explain the DIP switches on the internals, or the Sportster
which is supposed to be stripped to the minimum on price hardware wise.

Tho you could certainly justify having a SINGLE concealed jumper
like the Supra has, that those in the know could use when they use
the modem on some really stupid device that they want to be able
to dial into and do everything remotely config wise. It would then
not have any risk of some dork setting it wrong and needing support.

BG> And what about those computers which
BG> don't use carrier detect or DTR (Amigas?),

RS> Irrelevant, you can still configure the modem thru
RS> the comms port and AT&W whatever config you want the
RS> modem to have on that stuff. No need for a DIP switch.

RS> It must be doable, Hayes dumped all DIP switches
RS> right back with the original 2400 for christ sakes.

RS> ALL you need is NVRAM.

RB> but more and more (Microsoft) software is comming out, that

I dont believe that with full PnP etc that thats the case in the
sense that you are stuck with that and must have dip switches.

RB> At least with the Courier you can change a switch so
RB> that your modem either looks at NVRAM or AT&F1 on powerup.

Dunno, I think you are having a brain fart there, unless
I'm not understanding what you mean. If the app etc is
issuing an AT&F1, it doesnt matter how the modem powers up.

RB> All this above was from my bad memory,
RB> I am now going to RTFM on the subject.

Just dont over do it, who knows WHERE that sort of thing could lead to ?
