And so it came to pass, on 09-06-96 08:16,
that John Allen spake unto Matt Ion:
JA> Hi Matt, Long time no see/type. Had no idea you were still
JA> lurking in the background out there. Are you still running a BBS
JA> with a collection of Audio Files (ha, ha, ha, pun unintended)
JA> available for download?
I am indeed, although it's very much in need of file updates. One of these
days, when I actually get TCP/IP installed on the BBS machine, I'll start
sucking stuff down :)
JA> In recent posts there have been several questions about DIY
JA> loudspeakers and subs for both home and mobile use. If so, would
JA> like to pass the numbers on to the interested parties.
By all means. (604) 732-4446 is the main high-speed line. (604) 736-6330 is
another high-speed line *for now* but may revert to 2400 if this blasted PPI
modem doesn't shape up.
JA> About a million years ago there was talk about a mobile audio Echo.
JA> Did anyone actually try to begin one?
I did. Was distributing it privately. Almost got my $#!T together enough to
get it backboned, then between becoming personally very busy and a
combination of backbone feed problems, it just never quite seemed to happen.
I still have an AUTOSOUND echo here on 1040 that's carried by the Net153 LDS
(Local Distribution System). Maybe one day soon I'll take another stab at
backboning it.
[Much system description deleted]
Gad, I can only wish my home system was that nice.
My car system, on the other hand... :-)
After having our car broken into and the cruddy old system ripped off, I
actually got market-value adjustments for all the gear (most originally
bought used for cheap), so I went nuts.
Signal source is a (relatively low-end) Alpine CDE-7821. It was a tossup
between that and a Pioneer, which I prefer for their SuperTuner III tuners
(the only decent radio stations around here are in Victoria and Seattle...
not exactly CLOSE to Vancouver). In the end, though, the desire for Alpine's
superior CD transport won out. Plus, the Alpine's green matched the dash
lighting better than that putrid Pioneer amber :) Personally, I would have
preferred a fixed in-dash deck, but all anyone seems to make anymore are
these blasted detachable-faceplate things. Somehow, taking a little control
panel with me (a nuisance in itself) is small consolation knowing that I'm
leaving the guts of a $550 deck in the car...
Anyways... front stage power is provided by an older Pioneer 20+20 amp (GM-8
or something?) that I had kicking around; rear speakers are running off deck
power until I can afford a GOOD four-channel job.
Finally, the Pioneer's power arrives (or did at first - more on that later)
at a set of MB Quart QM2016cx's (two-way separates with 6.5" woofers). Their
all-in-one frame/basket/grille design was a bit of a hassle when putting them
in the stock door locations in our '87 Accord, but I pulled it off. Sounded
darn good, too (for the most part - more later :)
Rear power is channeled to a pair of JBL T-60(?) 6.5" woofers and a pair of
cheapie Radio Shack paper-cone tweeters that I had lying about, via the JBL
crossovers that came with the woofers (the matching tweeters were gone long
before I got ahold of the JBLs). Mounting those things under the irregular
rear deck was a serious PITA, let me tell you... took two layers of foam
weatherstripping to build it up enough that I could get a useable seal :)
Now, ask me about my experience with Quart. Go on, just ask me!
IKEA ... Swedish for "particle board."
